Therefore, we encourage young tattoo enthusiasts to take the time to consider their choices and come see us once they reach the legal age for tattooing in Latvia.

02 / BEFORE TATTOOING

We prioritize the limited space available in our shop to ensure an optimal environment for our tattoo artists and their clients. Therefore, accommodating additional guests may not always be feasible. Can I bring kids?

Entrance to the shop is permitted for individuals aged 16 years and above. Please leave Your little ones at home.

How can I prepare for a tattoo, especially if it is my first tattoo?

Preparing for your first tattoo can feel like a big step, but don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Here are some tips to ensure you have a smooth and enjoyable tattooing experience at Rīgas Tinte:

  1. Fuel Up: Aim to have a meal or snack about an hour before your tattoo session. Tattooing can cause your body to release endorphins, which may lower your blood sugar and lead to feelings of lightheadedness or even nausea. Eating beforehand can help keep your blood sugar stable and prevent these symptoms.

  2. Skin Prep: In the days leading up to your appointment, gently exfoliate and moisturize the area to be tattooed. This will help to prepare your skin for the tattooing process and can contribute to a better end result.

  3. Dress Comfortably: Choose clothing that is comfortable and provides easy access to the area you plan to tattoo. This will make the process easier for both you and your tattoo artist.

  4. Bring Entertainment: For larger tattoos, consider bringing along a book, music, or other form of entertainment to help pass the time. Tattooing can be a lengthy process, and having something to occupy your mind can make it more enjoyable.

  5. Pack a Snack: Tattooing can be surprisingly energy-intensive, and you might find yourself feeling hungry during a longer session. Feel free to bring along a snack to keep your energy levels up.

Can I drink alcohol before/after tattooing?

Drinking alcohol before or after getting a tattoo is not recommended. Here’s why:

Before Tattooing:

  • Blood Thinning: Alcohol thins your blood, making it difficult for the tattoo ink to set in your skin.
  • Impaired Judgment: Alcohol affects your decision-making abilities, which is crucial when you’re about to get a permanent piece of art.
  • Healing Complications: Consuming alcohol can hinder your body’s natural healing processes.

It’s advised to avoid alcohol, drugs, and blood-thinning medication for at least 24 hours before your tattoo appointment.

After Tattooing:

  • Weakened Immune System: Excessive alcohol can weaken your immune system, which you need in full force for efficient tattoo healing.
  • Impaired Healing: Alcohol can affect the healing process, potentially leading to a less-than-perfect tattoo outcome.

If you must, limit yourself to a beer or half a glass of wine with dinner after your tattoo, but excessive drinking should be avoided to ensure optimal healing.

03 / AFTER TATTOOING

Why is aftercare important?

Aftercare is crucial for the longevity and quality of your tattoo. It helps prevent infection and ensures that your skin heals properly around the new ink.

What should I do immediately after getting a tattoo?

Your tattoo will be wrapped in plastic. Keep it that way for the first two or three days, depending on your artist’s advice. After that, you can remove the plastic and start the cleaning process.

How do I clean my tattoo?
  1. Wash your hands thoroughly.
  2. Use warm water and a gentle, unscented antibacterial soap to clean the tattoo.
  3. Rinse with warm-to-mild temperature water.
  4. Pat the area dry with a towel and let it sit for at least 10 minutes.
How often should I clean my tattoo?

For the first four days, clean your tattoo two to five times a day. Follow each cleaning with a light layer of ointment.

What products should I use for moisturizing?

The first 3-4 days: Rub a small amount of ointment on your tattoo. You may use “Easy Tattoo” which you can buy in our shop or other special tattoo ointments. Always use cleans hands when applying it. Do not use Vaseline or petroleum saturated balms.

Can I re-bandage my tattoo?

No, do not re-bandage your tattoo after the original bandage is removed.

What should I avoid?
  1. Picking or scratching your tattoo.
  2. Exposing your tattoo to the sun without sunscreen.
  3. Swimming or soaking in hot tubs for the first week.
  4. Using products with allergens or irritants.
When is my tattoo fully healed?

Your tattoo will likely be fully healed around six weeks. Colored tattoos may take longer.

Can I engage in sports after getting a tattoo?

It’s advisable to avoid strenuous physical activities, including sports, for at least 48 hours after getting a tattoo. Here’s why:

  1. Sweat and Bacteria: Exercise induces sweat, and sweat can introduce bacteria to your new tattoo, increasing the risk of infection.

  2. Friction: Sports often involve friction, which can irritate the newly tattooed area and potentially affect the healing process.

  3. Swelling: Physical exertion can exacerbate swelling around your new tattoo, which is already a common symptom post-tattooing.

  4. Water Sports: Avoid swimming pools, lakes, or any water activities as they can expose your tattoo to harmful bacteria.

  5. Contact Sports: Activities that might result in the tattooed area getting hit or scraped should be avoided.

  6. Gym Equipment: If you must go to the gym, be cautious of using equipment that may come into contact with your tattoo. Always clean the equipment before use and consider covering your tattoo with a breathable fabric.

  7. Stretching Skin: Activities that stretch the skin around the tattoo can also affect how well it heals.

  8. Hydration: If you do engage in sports or any physical activities, stay hydrated as it aids in the healing process.

  9. Consult Your Artist: Before resuming any sports activities, it may be beneficial to consult with your tattoo artist for personalized advice.

If you’re an athlete or someone who engages in regular physical activity, plan your tattoo session during a period when you can afford to take some time off to ensure optimal healing.

What are the signs of infection?

If you experience fever, oozing, or scabbing at the tattoo site, or if the swelling lasts more than a week, consult your doctor immediately.

Any additional tips?
  1. Keep your tattoo moisturized.
  2. Avoid prolonged sun exposure and always wear sunscreen.
  3. Be gentle and keep the skin moisturized.
